Usually, when we thing of herbs, we think of gourmet cooks adding mysterious ingredients to other wise plain ingredients and serving fantastic exotic dishes due to the minute pinches of herbs. Aromatherapy herbs though are useful for other purposes than cooking.

For instance, sweet basil is often used in stews or soups that are peculiarly Italian. Basil is also known as St Johns Wort and is considered a natural remedy for depression. But basil as one of the aromatherapy herbs is used for fatigue, aches and pains, bronchitis and headaches.

Lemon grass is used in cooking many Thai and Indonesian dishes and is also a great tea. Lemongrass used as aromatherapy herbs has been found to be effective in treating the immune systems, nervous systems, joints and muscles, circulation, and ski8n care as well as the digestive system.

Marjoram is characteristically found in German cooking where it is a part of the mixture that seasons sausage. When used as aromatherapy herbs, marjoram with its warm and spicy aroma comforts and eases grief and loneliness. After work or sports, marjoram can help to relax muscles. Marjoram is also effective in promoting rest and sleep.

Chamomile is often found in teas or tea blends which are used to soothing, relaxation and rest. Used as aromatherapy herbs, chamomile is also popular for relaxing and soothing overwrought emotions and as an aid to sleep. However, it is also good for a number of skin ailments

Clary sage is another of the aromatherapy herbs with wide usage. It is very euphoric in nature and promotes a deep relaxation. Use of clary sage will alleviate feelings or depression, and emotional and physical exhaustion. The fragrance is pervasive and nutty and it is known for its sensual properties.

Hyssop may be the ‘bitter herbs’ referred to in the Bible. There are several varieties , but herb hyssop may be the best known. It can be used sparingly in Mediterranean dishes, but it has a strong flavor and a little goes a long way. The aromatherapy herbs known as hyssop are used for treating bronchitis, asthma, low blood pressure.

All these herbs should not be used unless you know proper uses and amounts. Some of them are contraindicated for direct skin application; others should not be used during pregnancy. It’s important to consult an expert if you are not sure about the effective use of one or more of the herbs.

An aromatherapy diffuser is a device which is intended to spread out the molecules of the essentials oils through the air of the room or space in which it is place. An aromatherapy diffuser works through gentle heating or exciting of the molecules so they are released and spread.

Many diffusers use an electric current to warm and spread the aromatherapy oils. To use it, a few drops of the aromatherapy essential oil is placed in the unit and gently heated until the fragrance fills the entire room. An aromatherapy diffuser is both practical and beautiful. You can choose a style of diffuser which will match the d‚cor of the room or that matches the particular essential oil you have chosen to represent your space.

In the past, the process of diffusing essential oils was time consuming and arduous, but modern methods, devices and products have simplified the process, while still leaving the wonderful variety of fragrances and their many benefits for health and well-being.

The style of the aromatherapy diffuser itself is as varied as the fragrances. You may choose from a hand carved rosewood box containing crystallized amber essence. The fragrance is uniquely India. It has aphrodisiacal qualities and is a rich and alluring perfume scent. It easily dissolves into the skin at body temperature.

A natural geode with a essential oil reservoir on a polished agate base with a copper snake figure is another unusual aromatherapy diffuser

A hand carved vine motif soapstone aromatherapy diffuser has a place for the tea light and a reservoir for a few drops of essential oil in water. The ambience created by the light and shadow patterns makes this an ideal diffuser for the bedroom, or for a romantic setting with a gourmet dinner at home.

The above are specific diffusers, but there are some general types of diffusers that will provide just the right product for any aromatherapy diffuser need you may have.
Fan diffusers blow air through small pads that contain your favorite essential oils. Nebulizing diffusers use an essential oil filled glass chamber. Air is pumped through the chamber with no need for heating the essential oils. Tea candle diffusers float a tea candle on a reservoir of water to which a few drops of essential oils have been added. Diffuser pots are ceramic containers with a few drops of essential oils added. The diffuser pots don’t require heat.

Aromatherapy candles have long been a popular way to dispense the fragrant benefits of essential oils into the room. The gentle heat provided by the candle wick warms and releases the volatile compound molecules that interact with our scent receptors. This causes the brain to initiate soothing blood chemistry changes which we perceive as relaxation, stress reducing, or sometimes vitality and healing.

Scented candles have been used for many years to add pleasant fragrance to a room, but only the therapeutic grade essential oils added to the candle can promise the healing benefits of aromatherapy candles.

Aromatherapy candles usually have the highest concentration of essential oils of any aromatherapy product. They are generally made of soy or beeswax, rather than petroleum based wax to ensure purity of the scents diffused into the room. The wicks are even certified to be lead-free in the highest quality candles.

In addition to the fragrance released whether the candle is glowing or unlit, the appearance of shape, size, and color can add to the enjoyment of these candles. To the extent that aromatherapy appeals to all the senses, aromatherapy candles fill an important role in the ambience.

Tea light candles are often used in a diffuser to warm the essential oils slightly, but aromatherapy candles also come in votive size. A slightly larger size in clear glass allows the colors of the candle itself to be seen and enjoyed. Pillar candles are tall and don’t rely on the confinement of the glass or other container to hold and support them. Spa candles are intended to bring the atmosphere of a relaxing spa while in the comfort of your bathtub. Several small candles in various heights lend not only the aromatherapy essential oils scent, but the enjoyment for the other senses as well. Jar candles of various types are common as aromatherapy tools. Once the aromatherapy session is completed, you can simply return the lid to the jar and store the candle away till the next time.

Aromatherapy candles are usually rated by the length of burn time, with size being the key factor. Often a candle can be expected to burn for 35-40 hours, which provides an expectation of many soothing hours of enjoyment.

When choosing your aromatherapy candles, be sure to confirm that they are lead-free. You will also want to think about storage of candles when they are not being used. If you have only one signature essential oil, this will not be a problem, but if you routinely use several for different purposes, you should be able to isolate the individual aromatherapy products so scents don’t clash.

Ten Minute Yoga Plan to Pep Up

Whether you might be staying home with a new baby or working too many hours at the office, anytime is a good time for yoga. You can do yoga stretches and postures in bed or even while driving to work.

Hundreds of fitness seekers use their lunch hour to squeeze in exercise and take off extra pounds.

I occasionally use my lunch hour for Yoga, said John Ray White, 35, who works at the Arkansas attorney general’s office. Downward facing dog and sun salutation are two of the postures she practices every day.

Practicing yoga in the middle of day some people think is the break that they need to face the afternoon, said Ray.

Lunch-hour fitness routines become more popular in warm weather.

Kick Back Log-on Pose

Interlace your fingers behind your head. Relax your elbows and shoulders. Smile, breathe and stretch your elbows back. Let the tightness release slowly.

E-mail Meditation

While reading your e-mail, remember to breathe slowly and focus your attention on your breath. Make the out-breath two times longer than the in-breath. This will immediately calm you.

Photocopier Stretch

Place your hands on the edge of the copier. Stand back with feet apart. Drop your head and chest. Breathe and relax your shoulders.

Close-the-deal Warrior Pose

Raise your arms to the side with fingers pointed. Take a big step to the side, with your right foot out and knee bent, your left foot planted, left leg straight. Keep the upper body straight and strong, shoulders relaxed. Relax into the stretch — don’t hold your breath. Return to a standing position, switch sides and repeat.

An All-Around Yoga Exercise: 12-Step Salute to the Sun

One of the all-around yoga exercises is the 12-step salute to the sun. Do it once or twice when you get up in the morning to help relieve stiffness and invigorate the body. Multiple repetitions at night will help you to relax; insomniacs often find that six to 12 rounds help them fall asleep.

1. Stand with your feet slightly apart, palms together, thumbs against your chest.

2. Inhale deeply while slowly raising your hands over your head, and bend back as far as possible, while tightening your buttocks. Hold for three seconds.

3. Slowly exhale and bend forward, keeping your knees straight, until your fingers touch the floor outside your feet. (If you can’t touch the floor, go as close as you can.) Bring your head in toward your knees.

4. Slowly inhale, bend your knees, and if your fingertips aren’t outside your feet on the floor, place them there. Slide your right foot back as far as you can go, with the right knee an inch or so off the floor, (a lunge position). Now look up as high as possible, arching your back.

5. Before exhaling again, slide your left foot back until it is beside the right one, and with your weight supported on your palms and toes, straighten both legs so that your body forms a flat plane. Make sure your stomach is pulled in.

6. Slowly exhale, bend both knees to the floor, bend with your hips in the air, lower your chest and forehead to the floor.

7. Now inhale slowly and look up, bending your head back, then raising it, followed by your upper chest, then lower chest. Your lower body - from the navel down - should be on the floor, and your elbows should be slightly bent. Hold for three to five seconds.

8. Exhale slowly and raise your hips until your feet and palms are flat on the floor and your arms and legs are straight in an inverted V position.

9. Inhale slowly and bring your right foot forward as in position 4. The foot should be flat on the floor between your fingertips. The left leg should be almost straight behind you, with its knee slightly off the floor. Raise your head, look up, and arch your back.

10. Slowly exhale and bring your left foot forward next to your right one. Straighten your legs and stand, trying to keep your fingertips on the floor, and try to touch your head to your knees as in position 3.

11. Slowly inhale, raise your arms up and stretch back as in position 2. Don’t forget to tighten your buttocks. Hold for three seconds.

12. Slowly exhale, lowering your arms to your sides. Relax. Repeat the series.

You can get audio or video tapes that give breathing instruction and teach relaxation techniques at health food stores, bookstores, and by mail order. It’s probably fine to learn breath and relaxation from a tape or booklet, but don’t try the yoga exercises without a skilled teacher. He or she can make corrections, caution you when necessary, and help you to adapt poses, if you need to.

It will be worth it to you to spend a little time finding an instructor who is right for you. Your diabetes nurse educator or other health care professional may be able to recommend a yoga instructor. Get referrals for a yoga instructor as you would for any professional you might wish to consult.

Yoga instructors aren’t required to be certified, but many are, through many different programs. Ask prospective teachers if they are certified. A certified teacher isn’t necessarily better than someone who isn’t certified, but it’s something to consider.

Yoga is fun, healthy, and calming. It’s a wise way handed down over several thousands of years. There is little danger in yoga, and even a little progress brings with it freedom and peace of mind.

Although most people with diabetes can exercise safely, exercise involves some risks. To shift the benefit-to-risk ratio in your favor, take these precautions:

Have a medical exam before you begin your exercise program, including an exercise test with EKG monitoring, especially if you have cardiovascular disease, you are over 35, you have high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels, you smoke, or you have a family history of heart disease.

Discuss with your doctor any unusual symptoms that you experience during or after exercise such as discomfort in your chest, neck, jaw, or arms; nausea, dizziness, fainting, or excessive shortness of breath; or short-term changes in vision.

If you have diabetes-related complications, check with your healthcare team about special precautions. Consider exercising in a medically supervised program, at least initially, if you have peripheral vascular disease, retinopathy, autonomic neuropathy, or kidney problems.

Learn how to prevent and treat low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia). If you take oral agents or insulin, monitor your blood glucose levels before, during, and after exercise.

If you have type I, and your blood glucose is above 250 milligrams per deciliter, check your urine for ketones. Don’t exercise if ketones are present, because exercise will increase your risk of ketoacidosis and coma.

Always warm up and cool down.

Don’t exercise outdoors when the weather is too hot and humid, or too cold.

It must have felt unnatural at first, to eat animal flesh. After all, we’re not so far removed from animals ourselves. Perhaps it even felt cannibalistic. There might not have been that much intellectual distinction between humans and other animals. When humans were pure vegetarians, they were living in harmony with the earth and with the other creatures co-habiting the planet with them. Their closest animal relatives, apes, were vegetarians. Eating the products of the earth, like plants, grains and fruits that they could gather and eat would have seemed the natural order of things.

But necessity is the mother of invention. Prehistoric men who lived in frozen geographies, or who lived in an area that became devastated by fire, would have eaten anything to survive. Just like the soccer players whose plane crashed in the mountains of Chile, and were forced to eat the flesh of other players who died in the crash, earliest man at some point had to make the choice for survival, and that could have consuming meat for the first time and changing human history - and health - forever.

We can imagine that men first ate meat that had been charred or cooked by virtue of being caught in a natural forest fire. They might have subsequently eaten raw meat, if necessary, but we can also imagine that our earliest digestive systems rebelled against eating raw meat.

Imagine having eaten raw foods and vegetables for eons, and all of a sudden, incorporating meat products into your system. You may have heard friends who were vegetarians tell stories of trying to eat meat and becoming violently ill afterwards.

Biologists will tell you we’re really not designed to eat meat, but we adapted to it. However, in the timeline of human history, eating meat is a relatively recent evolutionary development.

No matter what your reasons for eating a more vegetarian diet, there’s no denying the obvious health benefits that are derived from the elimination of red meat from your diet. On average, vegetarians have lower levels of the blood fats, cholesterol and triglycerides than meat eaters of similar age and social status have. High levels of blood fats are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Lacto-ovo vegetarians, those who eat eggs and dairy products, which contain cholesterol-raising saturated fats and cholesterol, have higher cholesterol levels than do vegans, as those who abstain from all animal foods are called. But even among lacto-ovo vegetarians, cholesterol levels are generally lower than they are among meat eaters.

Researchers have found that older men who eat meat six or more times a week are twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who abstain from meat. Among middle-aged men, meat eaters were four times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack, according to the study. As for women, who are partly protected by their hormones and generally develop heart disease later in life than men do, the risk of fatal heart disease has been found to be lower only among the older vegetarians. In a 1982 study of more than 10,000 vegetarians and meat eaters, British researchers found that the more meat consumed, the greater the risk of suffering a heart attack. Though eliminating meat from the diet is likely to reduce your consumption of heart-damaging fats and cholesterol, substituting large amounts of high-fat dairy products and cholesterol-rich eggs can negate the benefit. To glean the heart-saving benefits of vegetarianism, consumption of such foods as hard cheese, cream cheese, ice cream and eggs should be moderate. And the introduction of more vegetables, fruits and raw foods will definitely enhance the benefits of abstaining from eating meat.

Many people think of vegetarians as one homogeneous group that just doesn’t eat meat. But nothing could be further from the truth. There are different categories of vegetarians as diverse as the reasons for going vegetarian in the first place.

A vegetarian is generally defined as someone who doesn’t eat meat. But someone who is vegetarian could conceivably eat dairy products such as milk, eggs and cheese. A lacto ovo vegetarian doesn’t eat meat, fish or poultry, but does consume eggs, milk or cheese. A lacto vegetarian consumes milk and cheese products, but doesn’t consume eggs.

A vegan is someone who doesn’t consume any animal product or by-product, including dairy food. They eat only vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes. They also don’t use animal products, such as leather. Vegans also don’t use white sugar because it’s often processed with a substance derived from animal bones that whitens the sugar.

There are other categories within the vegetarian community. Fruitarians, for example, eat only fruit. Their rationale is that fruits, including fruits such as tomatoes, are self-perpetuating and don’t need to be planted to create the food source. They consider it a way of eating that’s most in balance and harmony with the earth, the most natural.

All of the above will eat cooked vegetables, fruits and legumes. There is also a growing movement towards eating only raw or living foods. This based on the assumption that cooking food processes most of the nutrients out of it, and to get all the nutritional value, vitamins and amino acids from food, it’s best consumed raw, or juiced. If cooked at all, it should only be cooked to slightly over 100 degrees, so the nutrients are still retained.

The more restrictive you become with your diet, however, the more educated you need to become to be sure you’re getting all the necessary proteins and vitamins that you need to maintain good health, especially muscle and heart health.

Vegetarian Diet for Optimal Personal and Environmental Health
It’s been well documented through the years that vegetarians are healthier than people who eat meat. Vegetarians are less likely to be obese, or to have high blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or colon cancer. They are also less likely to die from heart disease. Vegetarians have lower blood pressure even when they eat the same amount of salt as meat eaters and exercise less. Many studies show that vegetarians have less instances of colon cancer, due in large part to the differences in the bacterial flora that is present in the colon.
There are many factors in the vegetarian diet that contribute to better health. Vegetarians consume two to three times as much fiber as do meat-eaters, which has been shown to reduce cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and protect against colon cancer. They also consume more antioxidants, which are found in a wide variety of plant foods and protect cells from oxygen-induced damage and reduce the risk for heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and other diseases.
Vegetarians eat more isoflavones than do meat eaters. These compounds, found mostly in soy foods, are a type of phytochemical. Research shows that isoflavones may reduce the risk for prostate cancer and may improve bone health. Vegetarians also consume much less saturated fat and cholesterol than do meat eaters, resulting in significantly lower levels of blood cholesterol, decreased instances of heart disease and possibly for diabetes and cancer. And, since vegetarians do not eat meat, they are not exposed to heme iron, a type of iron found in meat that may increase the risk of heart disease and cancer.
And lastly, vegetarianism is not only optimally healthy for your body, but your environment and the planet’s animals. It allows you to live more harmoniously with the world around you, which improves mental and emotional health accordingly.
