Aromatherapy herbs
Usually, when we thing of herbs, we think of gourmet cooks adding mysterious ingredients to other wise plain ingredients and serving fantastic exotic dishes due to the minute pinches of herbs. Aromatherapy herbs though are useful for other purposes than cooking.
For instance, sweet basil is often used in stews or soups that are peculiarly Italian. Basil is also known as St Johns Wort and is considered a natural remedy for depression. But basil as one of the aromatherapy herbs is used for fatigue, aches and pains, bronchitis and headaches.
Lemon grass is used in cooking many Thai and Indonesian dishes and is also a great tea. Lemongrass used as aromatherapy herbs has been found to be effective in treating the immune systems, nervous systems, joints and muscles, circulation, and ski8n care as well as the digestive system.
Marjoram is characteristically found in German cooking where it is a part of the mixture that seasons sausage. When used as aromatherapy herbs, marjoram with its warm and spicy aroma comforts and eases grief and loneliness. After work or sports, marjoram can help to relax muscles. Marjoram is also effective in promoting rest and sleep.
Chamomile is often found in teas or tea blends which are used to soothing, relaxation and rest. Used as aromatherapy herbs, chamomile is also popular for relaxing and soothing overwrought emotions and as an aid to sleep. However, it is also good for a number of skin ailments
Clary sage is another of the aromatherapy herbs with wide usage. It is very euphoric in nature and promotes a deep relaxation. Use of clary sage will alleviate feelings or depression, and emotional and physical exhaustion. The fragrance is pervasive and nutty and it is known for its sensual properties.
Hyssop may be the ‘bitter herbs’ referred to in the Bible. There are several varieties , but herb hyssop may be the best known. It can be used sparingly in Mediterranean dishes, but it has a strong flavor and a little goes a long way. The aromatherapy herbs known as hyssop are used for treating bronchitis, asthma, low blood pressure.
All these herbs should not be used unless you know proper uses and amounts. Some of them are contraindicated for direct skin application; others should not be used during pregnancy. It’s important to consult an expert if you are not sure about the effective use of one or more of the herbs.
